Nakayama Masatoshi (1913-1987)
Nakayama Masatoshi
| One of the most well-known masters of Shotokan Karate is Nakayama Masatoshi, who comes from an old Samurai-family from Tokyo. Since his father operates as a medical officer at the army, Nakayama was as a child in Taiwan, where he learned Kendo and other Budo arts. Target of its parents was that Nakayama becomes also an officer. But instead of studying as planned at the Himeji university, he writes in himself in the Takushoku university, in order to study history and language of Japan. |
| At the university he meets Funakoshi and
begins 1932 with the study of Karate. he practices approx. 4 years
with interruptions with Funakoshi. 1937 he travels to China as an
exchange student and later Nakayama works for the chinese government.
In 1946 he returns to Japan.
By hes foreign stay he does not receive anything from the enormous modifications of the Shotokan in the years 1939 to 1943. Thus he has to learn many things after his return, whereby Miyata Minoru particularly helps him, there he was not accepted as equal one beside Egami, Nishyama and Obata. He begins to inspire Karateka for the idea of the transformation of Karate into a match-sport. Thus he wins also Nishiyama and Obata. With them he creates 1949 the JKA (Japan Karate Association), which has the target to compile rules for Match-Karate and to spread Karate by instructor courses. The JKA grows fast and spreads Karate by the instructors over the whole world. When Nakayama dies on April 15th 1987, the JKA is missing at a successor and the splintering of the JKA begins. |
