SHIMA MASAO

SHIMA MASAO studied the Matsubayashi ryu karate under NAGAMINE SHOSHIN. Shima was one of his most important students.

It had been forbidden to Shima to practice Kumite. So he founded a Dojo together with some others where they could practice this. This was at the beginning fifties, shortly after their Dan graduations.

Shima didn't ask money of his students at that time. But he wanted them to support him with water, that was very rare and had to be transported over long distances.

At that time, in the Dojo of Shime studied never more than ten members. In the beginning of the 60s mainly Kata were practiced. After this a strength training followed (among others working with the Chi'shi). Dealing with Bo was also practiced. There was a close connection to the Dojo of Nagamine.

In the Dojo of Shima TABA Sensei and KISHABA Sensei also taught, who were close friends of Shima. His Dojo was famous for the rough combats which were fought there, in opposite to the rather Kata oriented Dojo of Nagamine. The dojo of Shima was located in Kanzatobaru, Naha City.

Students of Shima were, among others, OSHIRO TOSHIHIRO, OTA EIHACHI.
