UKU GIKO (1800-1850)




UKU GIKO (also called UKU KARYU), who was one of the first known representatives of Tomari te, lived from 1800 until 1850.
He became known by beeing the teacher of some of the most important teachers of Tomari te MATSUMORA KOSAKU and OYADOMARI KOKAN. Both he taught Naihanchi Kata.
Matsumora learned from Uku for three years with the emphasis on footwork (to develop mobility) and on hip-work (to increase the power).
